Welcome to MAGELLAN, a ground-breaking project funded under Horizon Europe, running from January 2024 to December 2026 with a total budget of €7.5M.
The goal is to revolutionise the way Europe recycles and manufactures permanent magnets (PMs), a key component in advanced technologies that will shape the green transition across the continent, like for example electric vehicles (EVs) and wind turbines. However, there is a catch: permanent magnets are made from alloys of rare earth elements (REE) which are currently primarily sourced from China.
This geopolitical context raises concerns about the security of supply of these materials and requires coordinated action in the European Union. Discover MAGELLAN.
In the coming months and years, the project will give new impetus to Europe’s recycling industry and move forward towards the green energy transition. The project is not only good for the environment. It is also essential to develop Europe’s energy independence.
Their team brings together renowned experts from academia, research and industry, working jointly to find the best recycling and manufacturing routes for permanent magnets used in electric vehicle traction motors. Starting from our good ideas validated in a lab environment (TRL 5), they will make every endeavour to make them work in real life conditions (TRL 7) in order to pave the way for a complete EU supply chain in the longer term.
MAGELLAN is more than a project: it is a step towards a greener and more self-sufficient Europe. By improving the recycling of rare-earth magnets, we will make sure that the European Union stays at the cutting edge of the green transition, thus securing a cleaner, more sustainable future for all of us.
