Expertise

University of West Bohemia (UWB) is the only public institution of higher education based in the Pilsen Region. Currently, the University has nine faculties consisting of more than sixty departments and three institutes of higher education. More than 12,000 students are studying at the University.

The University of West Bohemia has a significant position among universities in both the Czech Republic and Europe. This is documented by the ECTS Label (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System designation) the University received in late 2012, which confirms that the study environment at the University of West Bohemia fully matches European standards. As a result, the University has officially entered the area of European tertiary education.

Participation in EU Projects and International Activities

University of West Bohemia is involved in the EU automotive research sector for more than 10 years. Entering as a partner to the Advanced Passive Safety Network, APSN (2004 – 2008, FP6 Network of Excellence project no. TNE3-CT-2003-506257) brought connection to the research, university and industrial partners. Further University of West Bohemia participated to both research (FP6 Integrated Project no. FP6-PLT-506503 APROSYS, Advanced Protective Systems, 2005 – 2009, FP6 STREP project no. FP6-031348 SIM Safety In Motion, 2006 – 2009, FP7 project no. 218643 THOMO Development of a Finite Element Model of the Human Thorax and Upper Extremities, 2009 – 2012, FP7 605485 ZeEUS Zero Emission Urban Bus System, 2013 – 2017) and educational (FP6 Marie Curie project no. MRTN-CT-2006-035965 MYMOSA Motorcycle and Motorcyclist Safety, FP7 People project no. 608092 MOTORIST Motorcycle Rider Integrated Safety 2014 – 2018). Concerning H2020 topics exploitable in the automotive industry, University of West Bohemia participates to projects no. 687414 STARS Satellite Technology for Advanced Railway Signalling, 737453 I-MECH Intelligent Motion Control Platform for Smart Mechatronic Systems and 678727 MOTOR Multi-Objective design Optimization of fluid energy machines.

University of West Bohemia also participates to the COST Action TU1407 Scientific and technical innovations for safer PTW, where the proposed representing person serves as vice-chair. Strong link to the global automotive sector is secured via FISITA (Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d'Ingénieurs des Techniques de l'Automobile), where Prof. Luděk Hynčík serves as a member of Executive Board and vice-president for education.

University of West Bohemia also investigates or has investigated national project with the EU overlap, e. g. project no. FT/TA-024 Application of design mechanics and biomechanics for increasing passengers’ passive safety and comfort (2004 – 2008 co-financed by Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic), project no. CG911-044-150 Reduction of accidents consequences of vulnerable road users in Czech population (2009 – 2010 co-financed by Ministry of Transportation of the Czech Republic project), project no. TA01031628 Scalable human models for increasing traffic safety (2011 – 2013 co-financed by Technology Agency of the Czech Republic) or project no. Development of Vehicle Active Bonnet System Regarding Variability of Population and Implementing Biomechanical Model Human Body (2014 – 2017 co-financed by Technology Agency of the Czech Republic), project no. TA03031347 Research and Development of Battery Electric Buses including Infrastructure (2013 – 2015 co-financed by Technology Agency of the Czech Republic), project no.
